There’s something wonderfully absurd about waking up in an impossibly comfortable bed at Millbrook Resort, surrounded by some of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine scenery, knowing that in just a few hours you’ll be throwing a BMW sideways on snow.

Millbrook was the ideal base for the BMW Snow & Ice Experience. Warm, luxurious and effortlessly serene, it’s the kind of place where doing absolutely nothing feels like a perfectly valid plan. The views were breathtaking, the restaurants faultless, the staff sharp and attentive, and the bed was the sort you melt into. Unfortunately for my desire to linger, a snow bus was waiting.

We headed over the Crown Range towards the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground, a top‑secret testing facility where phones were surrendered at the gate. No photos, no videos, no evidence. Just us, the snow and a fleet of BMWs gleaming at the summit.

As we climbed higher, excitement kicked in  along with one persistent thought: there is absolutely no way I’m going to be able to drift on snow. Famous last words.

The day began with the Drag Sprint. Simple in theory: put the power down, go fast, then stop. I managed to win my drag runs, although the first braking zone delivered a jolt of reality. I hit the brakes, the car began to slide, and for a split second I was convinced I was heading straight into the abyss.

Next came the Motorkhana in the BMW M440i Convertible, and suddenly the competitive spirit took over. Quick direction changes, sharp braking, threading through cones without turning them into trophies  -  that was the goal.

I may have collected a few.

But I also clocked the fifth‑fastest Motorkhana time of the day, which felt like a small personal triumph. Then came the Snow Drift. I climbed into the BMW M3 xDrive and eased myself into the rhythm of the snow. At first I was cautious. Then the rear stepped out, I caught it, and something clicked.

Soon I was fish‑tailing, drifting properly and carving doughnuts with confidence. The drift circles were the highlight,  I absolutely nailed them  and the M3 quickly became my favourite car of the day. It was surreal. Hours earlier I’d been convinced I couldn’t do it. Now I didn’t want to stop.

The BMW X3 M50 brought a new challenge with the slalom. On snow, every steering and throttle input matters. The car moves beneath you, and you react instinctively rather than simply pointing it where you want to go. It was a brilliant reminder of just how different  and demanding snow driving can be.

The instructors were exceptional throughout. Funny, encouraging and full of energy, they kept the atmosphere relaxed while still pushing us to explore the limits.  Then they showed us what real driving mastery looks like. The Instructor Ride was a hot lap on a snowy drift track carved through the mountains. Sitting in the passenger seat while an instructor hurled the car sideways at around 90km/h was equal parts terrifying and hilarious. After a day spent learning to control a slide myself, watching a professional link high‑speed drifts together was a humbling reality check.

And then the weather cleared.The helicopter transfer back to Millbrook had been touch‑and‑go due to low visibility. Instead, five helicopters arrived, lifting us over the Remarkables, the Crown Range and the snow‑draped Southern Alps.It was the perfect finale. Back at Millbrook, the contrast was striking. After hours in the cold, sliding BMWs around a mountain, stepping back into the warmth and comfort of the resort felt almost decadent.

I was exhausted, but absolutely buzzing. I’d arrived convinced I couldn’t drift on snow and left having won my drag runs, finished fifth in the Motorkhana and nailed the drift circles. And the best part? I wanted to do it all again. Although next time, I might try to leave the cones alone. A huge thank you to the BMW M Driving experience team
