Queenstown is known as the perfect winter holiday ski destination and you’d be amiss if you didn’t visit Cardrona during your trip.

Getting to Cardrona is super easy, about 35 minutes from Wanaka and 60 from Queenstown and the drive is worth its weight in gold as you awe at the continual beautiful snow-topped peaks. 10k before you get to the resort, you’ll either have to hop on a shuttle or chuck on some snow chains as the windy roads up can get very, very slippery.

We would recommend buying your tickets online or in one of the Queenstown offices as the line gets quick fast! You can also pre-hire your gear, but this does mean lugging it up the mountain, so we opted to hire our gear onsite. Whether you’re wanting to ski or give snowboarding a go, it doesn’t take long to get all your kit together, chuck all your personals in a locker and awkwardly walk to the mountain (how do you walk in these boots?!)

As beginner skiers (aka never been skiing before) we opted for a lesson to show us the ropes and start with the basics, again: how are you meant to walk in these things?! Our friendly ski-pro taught us all we needed to know, how to move downhill, get your boots off your skis and most importantly, how to stop. From there it was a few practice rounds on the magic carpet then off to the gondola to give the slopes a whirl.

Cardrona is accommodating for all skill sets and has a wide choice of ski runs, it’s the perfect activity destination for families and what’s more is that they even take care of the little ones. Deliver them to the on-site nursery/kindy while you hit the slopes or and kindy or enrol them into kid’s ski/board lessons.

After all that work you’ve no doubt built up a healthy appetite! Lucky for you, Cardrona also boasts a variety of dining options on the mountain;
from laid-back cafes to champagne vista views there’s a little something to suit all tastes.
